It’s a Next Gen v Blockhouse Bay Men’s Final

Next Gen and Blockhouse Bay have made the Men’s Scarbro Caro Bowl Final to be played this Friday night at Next Gen.   In semi-final matches last week, Next Gen comfortably knocked back the challenge from Karaka who were not at full strength and sorely missed the services of Ajeet Rai.  Blockhouse Bay took advantage of Parnell not having Rubin Statham and Dayne Kelly play for them on Friday night.  The match was close with Blockhouse Bay winning on a games countback.

There is only one more round of Pool Play left in the Women’s competition and Next Gen is first equal at the top of the table with Campbell Park who have completed all their round robin games.  Parnell still has a chance to reach the final if they win big in their last contest.

Men’s Semi-Finals

Next Gen captured both doubles matches against Karaka to take an early lead.  Finn Reynolds beat Brad Mousley in the top singles and then Rob Reynolds wrapped things up with a straight set win over Kai Milburn to move Next Gen into the final.  A severely depleted Parnell side put up a good fight against Blockhouse Bay but fell a few games short and lost on a countback after matches were split 3-3.  Even though Parnell were too strong in the top order they were found out lower down and lost the bottom doubles and the two bottom singles matches.  Diego Quispe-Kim impressed in his victory over veteran Victor Romero.

Men ‘s Playfoffs

Cockle Bay and East Tamaki avoided the relegation zone by winning their playoff matches on Friday. Cockle Bay was too strong for Bucklands Beach while East Tamaki won a close encounter with Royal Oak on games countback.  It’s been a great first season for East Tamaki who can now breathe a sigh of relief because they escape the relegation match.  The same can’t be said for Royal Oak and Bucklands Beach who will have everything to play for.

Women Pool Play

There were two rounds played last weekend with Next Gen winning both matches to take first equal place on the table with a game in hand over Campbell Park who have completed all round robin games.  Paige Hourigan stepped out for the first time to boost the strength of the Next Gen side when they beat Campbell Park and then followed up with a win over Bucklands Beach.  Parnell won two matches over the weekend and they still have a mathematical chance to make the final but will need to win big against Pompallier this week.  Bucklands Beach scored its first win of the season when they beat Kohimarama on Friday.

The 2022 Scarbro Caro Bowl Final between Next Gen and Blockhouse Bay will be played this Friday at Next Gen.  Matches start at 6pm.   The last round of women’s round robin contests are also scheduled this Friday.
