The top four teams in the Scarbro Caro Bowl men’s competition faced off against each other in round five last Friday. Blockhouse Bay won a tight match over Cockle Bay by 4-2 winning three singles matches and sharing the doubles honours. Cameron Norrie kept his winning streak well and truly alive beating Victor Romero in the top rubber but it was former Davis Cup team member Adam Thompson who scored a crucial three set victory over Matt Meredith to notch up the vital winning point. Parnell and Remuera drew 3-all but it was the Parnell side that took the 2 bonus points on sets due to Nick Turner claiming the first set against Kevin Doh before losing the next two and the match. Kohimarama crept closer to the top four teams on points by winning its second straight contest and now sits just four points behind Cockle Bay which has lost their last two contests. In the remaining tie last week Royal Oak downed Pompallier 4-2 although surprisingly lost the top two singles matches.
Parnell is out in front of the women’s competition easily defeating Remuera without losing a match. Youth proved to be no match for experience with Pavlina Nola accounting easily for junior Rosie Cheng and Kairangi Vano working a bit harder to defeat young Shaylee Syme. The big guns were out in force for Sunnyhills in a 6-0 demolition of Pompallier with Stephanie Bengson from Australia making her first appearance in the side. Royal Oak beat Kohimarama 5-1 aided by the presence of Abigail Guthrie who teamed up with Leela Beattie to bolster the ranks. Glendowie had the bye.
The sixth round of matches is scheduled this Friday November 15th.
