Defending champs Parnell were beaten in the opening round of the 2014 Men’s Scarbro Caro Bowl competition by the youthful Kohimarama team last Friday evening.
Playing in fine conditions, the Kohi team led by Nathan Carter and backed up by leading juniors William Matheson, Jack Heslin and Trent Smith, proved too strong for the experienced Parnell side loaded with former Davis Cup players. Matheson won in straight sets against Mark Neilsen, Heslin scored a good win over Steve Downs while Smith ousted Nick Turner in two sets.
Blockhouse Bay looked good in their 6-0 victory over Pompallier with former Davis Cup Team members GD Jones, Austen Childs and Adam Thompson all winning in straight sets. Royal Oak brushed aside the Parnell 2 team and Cockle Bay edged Remuera 4-2 in the closest match of the round.
In the women’s competition the defending champions Sunnyhills easily defeated Remuera 6-0 and Pompallier managed a clean sweep against Glendowie. Royal Oak, led by Leela Beattie and Abby Guthrie, comfortably beat Kohimarama and as expected Parnell 1 beat Parnell 2 by the same score.
The second round of the Scarbro Caro Bowl competition is scheduled to be played this Friday October 3rd with all matches commencing at 6pm.
