This week, local boy, Cameron Norrie, has reached an incredible Top Ten world ranking in junior tennis.
Starting as a tenacious tot who couldn’t stop hitting a ball with a sawn off racket on the family driveway in Bucklands Beach, Cameron learnt tennis through the junior programme at Bucklands Beach Tennis Club. His talent and drive led to his fi rst National title at 11 years old and through his teens he maintained his stellar progress with National titles at 14s and 16s and represented NZ in the Junior Davis Cup, amongst many other achievements.
Now Cameron’s taking on the world! He has gained entry to the top tier of junior tennis tournaments around the globe. He’s already competed at this year’s Australian Open Junior events this January (only losing to the eventual winner) and has just won his fi rst ITF Junior title at Manila. He is expecting to compete in the Junior events at the remaining Grand Slams this year – the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
What is even more incredible is that this determined 17 year old has achieved this level while continuing to live and study locally (at Mellons Bay Primary, Bucklands Beach Intermediate and currently Macleans College). He has been trained at Tennis Auckland’s Hi Performance programme run by James Greenhalgh.
All this competition comes at a considerable cost, involving extensive overseas travel and the services of a coach. NZ sports funding is directed elsewhere, and the big bucks of pro tennis are not yet in reach. So, to help him push to the next level, Cam needs help with sponsorship and donations.
