The final grand slam of the year is under way and what an amazing tournament it has been so far. Prior to the Tennis starting, two special functions took place in New York. The ATP celebrated 40 years of the number one ranking. Only 24 players have received this honour since its inception in 1973 and only 16 have been crowned the season ending number one. A who’s who of the tennis world were present to celebrate this occasion with presentations on stage to the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djockovic, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Ivan Lendal and many others. It was a truly amazing event. Not to be outdone, the WTA honoured 40 years since the infamous battle of the sexes match between Billie Jean King and journalist Bobby Riggs and showed a sneak peak in to the new documentary which will be released on the match and fight Billie Jean went through to establish women’s sports.
On the tennis front, former number one Lleyton Hewitt has rolled back the years upsetting tournament favourite and former Heineken Open Champion Juan Martin Del Potro. The men’s event is shaping up to be another thriller with Roger, Rafa, Novak and Andy all looking in very good form. One the Women’s side Serena is looking as devastating as always brushing aside the heir apparent to her throne Sloane Stephens. World number two Victoria Azarenka lurks on the other side of the draw and former French Open champion Li Na looks poised to be the spoiler.
Player discussions went really well and we are looking forward to making announcements in the coming weeks. We know you will be happy with the field that is coming together!
