Fresh off a Davis Cup victory for New Zealand last week, Michael Venus made his first appearance in the Scarbro Caro Bowl men’s competition for Parnell last Friday. His appearance, along with Finn Tearney playing for the first time at number two for the team, made a huge difference as the side thrashed the Parnell No. 2 team without dropping a set. Parnell 1 had previously lost two contests without winning a match but after last Friday they now move threateningly into contention for a spot in the semi-finals. Blockhouse Bay continued its winning streak with a 6-0 win over Remuera and Cockle Bay managed the same score line against the youthful Kohimarama team. The final match of round four was won by Royal Oak with a 5-1 result against Pompallier.

While the men’s matches were fairly one sided affairs, the women’s competition produced some very even contests in the fourth round. The top of the table clash between Royal Oak and Sunnyhills was tight with the Oak team narrowly winning by 4 matches to 2. Sacha Jones defeated Leela Beattie in the top singles match but Abby Guthrie picked up two vital points in singles and doubles matches for the Royal Oak team. Kohi beat Parnell 1 on a sets countback after matches were locked at 3-3 and Pompallier squeezed by Parnell 2 with a 4-2 result. The bottom of the table clash between Glendowie and Remuera boiled down to a one set win on countback for Glendowie after they had dropped both of the opening doubles matches but bounced back to claim three of the singles played.
