Congratulations to Sunnyhills and Blockhouse Bay Tennis Clubs for successfully defending their Scarbro Caro Bowl titles for the 2015 season. On a balmy evening last Friday the Sunnyhills women’s side won a close final against Parnell in front of a supportive home crowd. The two opening doubles matches were split when Abigail Tere-Apisah/Luci Barlow accounted for Claudia Williams/Chloe Shin in straight sets. The experience of Sacha Jones/Kairangi Vano prevailed in a close tussle with Rosie Cheng/Imogen Golder to level the tie. The winning duo went on to win their respective singles matches with Jones beating Cheng and Vano beating Golder in two sets. Tere – Apisah pulled one back for Parnell but the tie was wrapped up for Sunnyhills when Shin beat Barlow comfortably in the bottom singles rubber. The victory was the third straight for the Sunnyhills side and Tennis Auckland congratulate them for this achievement and for their warm hospitality in hosting the event at St Kentigerns College.
The Men’s final was a similar outcome with Blockhouse Bay attempting to win its second consecutive title against first time finalists Cockle Bay. The Cockle Bay side had gone through pool play unbeaten but Blockhouse Bay gained the upper hand early on by claiming both of the doubles matches led by world number 43 Artem Sitak. In the opening singles Victor Romero survived a close first set against Matt Meredith before running away with the second to give Blockhouse Bay a 3-0 overall lead. Connor Heap recovered from losing the first set of his match to beat Justin Megraw and keep the match alive. This was shortlived however when Artem Sitak romped through the first set of the top singles to seal victory for his team.
Congratulations to Blockhouse Bay for winning its second championship and to Cockle Bay for a successful season and for the way the club staged the final and hosted close to 300 tennis fans on finals night.
Tennis Auckland would like to thank all of the teams in the competition this season along with the individual managers and club sponsors. And finally to Scarbro Construction for their long time sponsorship of New Zealand’s premier interclub competition – thank you!
