Tennis Auckland advises of the passing of Peter Wilson ONZM on Friday 19 May 2023
Peter was one of the true characters of tennis in this country, providing strong leadership and vision enabling the game to advance and develop over a 30-year period.
Always passionate about the game, he directed his energies not only to his swinging leftie serve, but significantly in the administration and development of the sport.
He was a recognised face at international tennis tournaments especially Wimbledon which he attended annually until recently.
His leadership of tennis saw him awarded a number of special honours including being appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to tennis in the 1997 New Year Honours.
Peter was a hugely respected Life Member of Tennis Auckland, Life Member of Tennis NZ, and a Life Member and Patron of Parnell Tennis Club.
For 11 years Peter represented Auckland on the New Zealand Executive Committee and then was a Member of the Tennis New Zealand Policy Council.
Peter was elected as President of Tennis New Zealand for the 1995/96 season.
The transformation of Tennis Auckland back in the 1980’s was driven by Peter, establishing a platform for the game to develop and advance.
Peter was an inspirational and integral force behind the migration of the Stanley St grass courts to the hard courts enjoyed today and the development of the domed indoor court facility. He was also integral in securing land and development of the Merton Road Tennis Centre.
Peter will be missed by many.
