SCARBRO Caro Bowl

No Major Upsets On Scarbro Caro Bowl Opening Night

Results were fairly predictable in the opening round of Scarbro Caro Bowl play last Friday evening.  Last years four men’s semi-finalists got underway with routine victories and by doing so have already signalled to the field that they will be hard to beat again this season.  Defending champs Parnell downed Pompallier and it was good to see former Wellingtonian and US College player Finn Tearney register a winning point for the Parnell side.  Runner-up in 2012 Blockhouse Bay had a tougher time against Royal Oak splitting the singles honours but claiming both doubles for a 4-2 win.  Remuera 1 beat the youthful Kohi side with Alex Klintcharov (Rem) shining in the top singles with a straight set win over Englishman Nick Hatchett.  The strong Cockle Bay side whitewashed Remuera 2 6-0 without dropping a set and it was good to see top junior Cameron Norrie in action for his team.

Remuera made a strong start in the women’s competition by beating Kohi on a sets countback after matches were tied 3-3.  Rosie Cheng, fresh from a stint in Mexico playing for NZ, won her match at the top and was backed up by her young team mates.  Defending champs Royal Oak, led by Leela Beattie, split the singles matches with Glendowie but were too strong in the doubles and ran out 4-2 winners.  Parnell downed Pompallier by 5 matches to 1 with former pro Pavlina Nola leading the way.

Second round matches will be played this Friday at club venues.
